Genre: Action thriller, Sci-Fi, horror, Dystopian, Mythological fiction

Triggers- Gore, violence

This dystopian action thriller is set in 1984 during the Cold War era. When a government experiment spirals out of control, Tobias North, the clandestine head of collective forces, makes a controversial decision. As a result, an internationally coordinated strike team of combat fighters is formed. Their mission is to destroy the products of the experiment that are terrorising the world, “The Titans”.

The first chapter instantly hooked me with its eerie vibes. The illustrations are a bonus and helped visualise the settings and characters! The book’s unique element includes songs with QR codes that act as the BGM for the scene or chapters.

As the first instalment in a four-book series, this novel begins with the author clearly outlining his vision for the larger narrative. D.D. Ward’s attention to detail enhances the reading experience, making it easy to connect with the story’s depth.

My favourite parts of the book were the action sequences and the scenes with the titan appearances. They follow an immersive and cinematic narrative style. The layered and detailed writing gives the book a medium pace. Some of the dialogue felt a bit extended, which slowed down the pacing of certain chapters. Toy Soldiers of Monsters and Men maintains a foreboding tone throughout.

Greek mythology plays a prominent role in shaping the themes. The book also explores themes like differences of opinion, collateral damage and consequences of holding high positions.

This story is centered around many characters. The author adopts a psychologically rich character development for every character. This adds depth to the storyline.

Grace Bailey, the intelligent and disciplined second-in-command to Tobias North, is one of the prominent characters throughout the book.
Tobias North, a hardened man well past his 70’s hasn’t allowed age to diminish his resolve. He is the formidable force and mastermind behind the strike team.
The crux of the story revolves around Professor Nicholas Kratzer and he works closely with Tobias.
Aharin-Seth Tor is a reluctant part of the team and he has a rough past. He is an opinionated Egyptian ruler with tremendous strength.

The ending matches the expectations that the first chapter sets. The book leaves no stone unturned and also sets the scene for the next book. This is the sort of book that isn’t affected by spoilers. It is a sensory-rich novel that needs to be experienced firsthand! I’m eager to see how the story unfolds in the next volume.

I would like to thank the author for sending a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I rate the book 4/5.
