The story follows retired Secret Service agent Ron Eldon as he investigates the apparent suicide of his stepdaughter, Jove.
The book moves at a medium pace and has an engaging, layered narrative with intriguing twists.
I liked the character-driven plotline. Ron Eldon comes across as an intelligent investigator and a devoted family man. His partner, Yolanda, is quick-witted and easily my favourite character in the novel.
Set in England, the story begins as a seemingly straightforward mystery. I didn’t anticipate the exploration of the transatlantic slave trade in the 1800s and it turned out to be one of the most interesting aspects of the book for me.
I was especially invested in the historical storyline and found myself hoping for a stronger payoff.
While the ending is packed with surprises, I felt some of its biggest moments depended on a level of precision and coincidence that slightly diminished the impact for me.
Espionage thrillers often portray spies as near-invincible operatives. What sets this book apart is its exploration of the human side of espionage, the personal sacrifices, moral dilemmas, and emotional cost of a life lived in service.
The action sequences are well executed and are among the strongest aspects of the novel. Ultimately it is Eldon’s emotions, choices, and inner conflict that leave the greatest impression.
