A Different Type of Poison by Liz Alterman follows two women, Molly and Anna. Molly is an author who is working on the sequel of her thriller novel ‘Birds at Night’, which was a roaring success. Anna is a book club organiser and is fixated on Molly’s book and perhaps…Molly herself.
Not much happens plot wise in the first half of the book, but the writing kept me invested! I flew through the second half of the book as it was unputdownable.
The story alternates between the women’s perspectives and excerpts from Molly’s book. Despite this, the narrative is easy to follow. The reader is left guessing the significance of the excerpts until the very end but the payoff is satisfying.
The book shows us the side of an author that we don’t usually get to see. Molly is dealing with writer’s block, public appearances, insecurities and family issues while racing against the clock to meet her deadline. She barely gets the time to bask in the glory of her success with so much on her plate.
Anna on the other hand is the most interesting character in the book. She keeps the reader hooked with her unpredictable actions.
The book is bound to keep you on the edge and creep you out. There are a few twists, and I’m sure there will be at least a couple that you won’t see coming. It is a must-read for thriller lovers.
